The air is permeated with excitement, enthusiasm, a burning desire to win - the Bol d'Or Mirabaud sailing regatta on Lac Leman lake is about to begin.
The aim of the competition is to get back and forth as quickly as possible between the two ends of Lac Leman, which the Swiss themselves call the sea. The regatta has brought together sailors from all over Europe, and I watch it from the ship Lausanne, which has been turned into a floating spectator stand for a day.
The wind carries the fresh aroma of apples and oak moss - the lake shore is densely wooded. I am writing these words to you with trembling hands - who would have guessed that the spirit of competition would carry me so far with its frenetic energy.
The regatta is over and I am watching the sunset in Montreux, the most beautiful town on the shores of Lac Leman. The lake shimmers in all shades of purple and the water itself gives an unparalleled sense of calm and freedom.
